A Life in Motion - by Christopher Rael

College is a Business

And what is big business in America? Capitalist. They don’t give a shit about you or me, but about the well being of their institution and the inflation of their bank account. The sooner you can accept it and adapt, the better off you’ll be. Then you can start to consider what you can do that makes them look better, prompting them to want to take care of you, their product. Think of it like a grocery store: does anyone buy the fruit hiding in the back, behind or beneath others? Does anyone want the vegetable that doesn’t look better than the rest? No. It’s product marketing. Stores put products on the shelves with eye catching labels and slogans. Is the product beneath the wrapper always the best quality? No. But it was marketed well. You may not be the best student, but you need to be able to market yourself well, making universities want to buy in to you. Who is your target demographic? Where do you place your product to maximize exposure? Is your packaging and outward appearance striking enough to compell someones faith in you? Does your slogan sneak into your target’s subconscious? If your product isn’t the highest quality, is it good enough that combined with the packaging, it continues to draw in consumers?

It’s a hard reality, but it IS reality. We live in a world where 3.8 GPA’s get rejected by state schools, and 2.7’s get accepted into private instituions. Sure, it may not sound fair, but nothing in life ever is. You can’t hope for an opportunity to present itself; you’d be better suited to create one. If you’re from the majority population of middle class citizens who don’t make quite enough to afford university on your own, but aren’t broke enough to warrant financial aid, you’re forced to either get creative or throw in the towel. The reality of the matter is, you’ll have a long line of stiff competition and need to find something to set you apart from every other applicant—you either hope for a generous donation to the institution on your behalf, or you become Liz Murray and make something out of nothing.
